Let’s Shine a light on Plastic Free July

The world is changed by your example,

not your opinion

Plastic Free July is a global movement to help millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution. In order fr us to have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities! Unfortunately, plastic pollution is everywhere, and there is expected to be more plastic than marine life in our Oceans by 2050. Let’s do our part to help rectify this!

OceanЯ stands for Ocean Recycled. Our goal is to clean up our oceans and have fun doing it! As plastic is the main contributory waste in our Oceans at the moment. With more than, 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tonnes. More than 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine animals die from plastic pollution every year. Sadly, 100% of baby sea turtles having plastic in their stomachs.

Cleaning the beach of plastic waste!

The damage we are doing to marine life and our ecosystem is becoming irreparable. Thus, we need to take action & fast! We are passionate about the oceans, and we know you are as well. If there’s one thing that we won’t give up, it’s our planet.

More than two-thirds of our surface is ocean. Yet, little is done to preserve it. As we love spending time in the water we could see this with our own eyes. The plastic free movement is extremely close to our hearts as at OceanЯ we’re on a mission: to reclaim our oceans. We aim to do this by removing as much of this plastic as we can and recycling it into something new: eye-catching, boldly designed clothing and product ranges for businesses and consumers.

Our work with Enaleia!

In the image above, you can see our work with Enaleia, we help them with a huge beach clean in Greece!

Enaleia are a non-profit social enterprise consisting of locally trained fishermen. The fishermen are paid to collect ocean plastic and bring it ashore to be recycled. This plastic then enters the circular economy, either through recycling or up-cycling! We pay these wonderful fishermen in Greece & Italy to fish for plastic, thus for every garment you purchase with us, removes 1 kg of plastic from the ocean. By purchasing one rash guard from us, you will removing 1 kg of plastic from the Ocean, how cool! It will work towards making our Oceans plastic free!

Our fabric partner is Ocean Balance and we predominantly work with recycled polyester that comes from recycled plastic bottles, recycled fishing nets, and reclaimed ocean waste. They recover PET plastic waste (essentially marine litter) from the ocean. Although we are still using plastic, it will all be recycled, entering the circular economy. We will be up-cycling our ocean waste!

Next, this recovered ocean waste is brought to an approved recycling facility. Following this, the conversion process of turning waste into recycled materials begins. We will just attach a lovely post about our work with Ocean Balance here, if you would like to research it a little more.

More members of OceanЯ working to remove plastic from the shore!

We love to get involved in beach cleans with our partner Enaleia to help remove discard plastic ocean waste from our beach shores, beaches and oceans. If you would like to check out some more ways to help remove plastic from our eco-system or how to become plastic free, then check out this fantastic website.

Together, we only have one planet, one climate & future- let’s make it a reduced plastic one!
