What does it mean to be a Certified B Corporation?
Essentially, Certified B Corporation companies are verified by B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. This ensures that certified companies abide by their sustainable values and meet a rigorous standard of consistency and inclusivity in their business practices, actively working to create a fair economy.
Being a Certified B Corporation, or B Corp, means we have aced the test for being a fair and honest company. Think of it as a gold star for doing business the right way. OCEANR is proven to be fair, sustainable, and has a tangible role in making the planet a healthier place for everyone.
A company must receive a minimum score of 80 to achieve certified status, and OCEANR is proud to have successfully met this standard. It feels good to have our hard work recognised and rewarded after all our years of committing to honest business practices.
What difference does it really make to be a Certified B Corporation?
Being a Certified B Corporation, makes OCEANR stand out from the crowd in terms of our actual, trackable commitments to sustainable business practices. It’s a badge that our whole team wears proudly. We are serious about sustainable business and back it up with real results.
The assessment that businesses undertake to become a Certified B Corporation is called the B Impact assessment. Our B Impact Assessment score proves we aren’t just saying the right things when we talk about saving our oceans, we’re also physically out there doing the right things.
The median score for businesses who complete the B Impact assessment is 50.9, and the qualifying score for Certified B Corporation status is 80. OCEANR’s score on its B Impact assessment was 84.5.
There are over 9,000 Certified B Corporation companies worldwide, but just over 60 of those are based in Ireland, and OCEANR is proud to be one of them.
How was OCEANR assessed for its B Corp certification?
Certified B Corporations meet the highest standard of verified social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. Becoming a Certified B Corp signifies that your company meets high standards for social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
Despite what the world at large might think, business doesn’t just have to be about making profits – you can also set out to do good along the way. OCEANR has been proven that it holds its people and the planet in as equally high esteem as its traditional business goals.
We were assessed for our B Corp certification along the following lines:
- Governance — our overall mission, transparency, and engagement with our sustainability mission
- Workers — our contributions to our employees’ financial security and overall wellbeing
- Community — our impact on and engagement with the local communities in which we operate and hire from
- Environment — the direct impact that our supply chain has on biodiversity
- Customers — how we engage with our customers and manage their experience with us
OCEANR’s sustainability mission has always been much more than a box-ticking exercise, and that’s thanks to each member of our passionate team.
What’s next for OCEANR?
Some things never change, and OCEANR’s core values are one of them. While we are serious about producing premium apparel, the sustainability of our materials and production process is not something that has ever needed to be sacrificed to achieve our quality.
Transparency is key to how we operate at OCEANR. We run a lifecycle analysis across our product range, providing insights into the environmental impact of our garments, benchmarked against industry standards. We also partner with impactful non-profit organisations dedicated to reducing waste. In line with this commitment, we recently celebrated removing 30,000kg from Indonesian rivers, which you can read more about by clicking here.
At OCEANR, we create stylish, sustainable, and custom apparel for luxury resorts, yachts, and outdoor adventurers. Achieving Certified B Corporation status reinforces our commitment to a transparent, circular supply chain and validates our ongoing efforts towards creating a more sustainable future. We are delighted that our efforts have been officially recognised, but that doesn’t mean our work stops here!
