Project Overview
THE CHALLENGE
JAX Sailing are a young and adventurous college team, and they required team designs that reflected their official college branding without losing their adventurous spirit. Being out on the water every day, the team were also becoming increasingly aware of plastic pollution and damage to marine ecosystems and environments. As sailors, they wanted to do their bit to work towards fixing the problem and creating healthier waters for everyone.
OUR SOLUTION
We collaborated closely with the team to design gear that was sustainable and exciting. We incorporated Jacksonville University’s striking branded colours into tech tees, pinnies, shorts, and leggings for the team. We also seamlessly aligned with the planet-focused values through our use of recycled polyester fabrics and eco-friendly production methods. It was a win-win for both of our teams.
About
JAX Sailing
JAX Sailing came from humble beginnings in 2013, ranking 250th in the United States, but jumped up to 35th in their first year, to finishing 3rd at the National Championships in 2021, and winning the 2021 and 2022 Singlehanded National Championships.
The small but mighty JAX Sailing team has grown from just five people who learned how to sail on campus to over 40 world-class athletes from around the United States and beyond. The team has one of the highest GPAs at Jacksonville University and together, they have achieved four All American Sailing Team Honours.
It was also an absolute pleasure for the OCEANR team to learn that our vision aligned with JAX Sailing off the water with our sustainability and planet-friendly values. Inspired by the ocean waves that they sail across and the ecosystem that reside within the waves, the team advances sustainability education and care for the water through service projects and community engagement throughout the city of Jacksonville. We truly saw eye-to-eye on our belief that reviving our oceans and creating a healthier planet is all about the little changes that we can all make in our daily routines.

Customised Designs
As a university sailing team, we worked closely with JAX Sailing to ensure that their designs struck a balance between representing Jacksonville University and providing the team with their own distinct sense of identity. We incorporated the on-brand, bright green into the team’s gear, leaving no mistake about who they were representing while on the water. We worked this approach into a range of products for the team: tech tees, leggings, shorts, and pinnies.
Eco-Friendly Production
The bulk of our team kit collection collaboration with JAX Sailing, such as the tech tees, were produced using sublimation printing. This is an eco-friendly method of manufacturing clothing as it does not require water and minimises fabric wastage, thereby doing our bit to reduce the fashion industry’s environmental impact.
Recycled Materials
OCEANR tech tees are often produced using our Barista Balance fabric, which is created from recycled coffee grounds. Re-using coffee grounds that would otherwise end up in landfill as a core material in our production process forms an essential part of our mission to protect and revive the ocean, as the polyester is removed from circulation.
Shared Values
A key highlight of our partnership with JAX Sailing was our shared sustainability mission. As a university team, JAX Sailing is closely aligned with their sustainability department, and they actively work together to increase awareness about ocean conservation. We were so excited to work with a group of athletes who aren’t just committed and talented, but passionate about the waves that they sail on.
